SOURCE: I have an antique bulova Hi! You can't tell actually the date when it is manufactured by the serial number of the case metal. Not all Bulova watches will have serial numbers on the case. Serial numbers do not all contain the same number of digits. If there is a serial number, it should be engraved here. To find the serial number on the case of your Bulova watch, simply flip it over and look at the flat back of the case. (Check the first link under References for a complete chart.). If your watch was made between 19, there is a symbol near the stem set screw of some Bulova watches. Turn the watch over and look on the back. Many recent models have a serial number on the back that you can type in to see if it is a real Bulova. Since Longines bought out Wittnauer in 1936 I'm guessing that this is pre-1936. The dial is marked 'Wittnauer' as is the movement. Can't find anything on Google for Wittnauer serial numbers. There is no serial number on the movement, only on the case back (inside). I am trying to date a men's Wittnauer wrist watch. Bulova has used a few different systems for dating their watches. Once you have identified a date code on your watch, you will need to interpret it, as the date is never printed in an obvious way.
